Placement policy

Score validity

1 year

Scores are valid for placement into courses beginning within one year of your first attempt.

Access period

6 months

Exam access and Prep & Learning Modules expire six months from your first login.

Maximum attempts

5 attempts

You have five total attempts. A 72-hour waiting period is required between each attempt.

Placement is not binding

Your choice

If your score places you lower than your current placement, you may choose to take the lower course but are not required to.

A note on MATH 1305

Optional (if qualified)

Math for Critical Thinking is available to students outside of Business, Science, Engineering, and Nursing who meet the SAT/ACT threshold. It is not a prerequisite for College Algebra (MATH 1313) and should not be taken by students in those four areas.

Transfer students

Recommended

All transfer students entering without prior college-level math courses should take ALEKS. We strongly encourage any transfer who needs additional math courses to take the ALEKS 鈥 even if not required.

Frequently Asked Questions: Placement Policy

ALEKS scores are valid for placement into courses beginning within one year of the date of your first attempt.

Yes, but you must qualify by the day prior to the last day to add classes. If you need to register for a class that is closed, contact your academic advisor. If you do not have an advisor, email the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Math, and Physics at tholcomb@hc.edu or the Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at cose@hc.edu.

Use the ALEKS Prep and Learning Module to review the material, then retake the assessment. If you continue to receive the same score, ALEKS is likely identifying a genuine gap 鈥 the course it suggests will help you build that foundation. Math is cumulative, and gaps in earlier concepts affect all subsequent work.

No. You must achieve the minimum placement score for each course. You may enroll in the course for which you did qualify, or continue to remediate and retest.

Log in to the placement exam site and click Retake Placement. Your scores will appear under Past Placements. Your highest exam score determines placement.
